Teh Residence
A multigenerational and energy efficient layout is concealed behind references to traditional architectural forms.
Starting with a newly subdivided block, the client’s brief for a new cost effective, multi-generational family home, as well as orientation optimization, resulted in a rectilinear form.
Whilst the layout was optimal, the clients were concerned with a possible heavy front elevation which dominated the street and did not speak of the residential context of the area. The answer was the use of layered materials, with varying levels of visual permeability. The ground floor plane utilises face brickwork, common in the area and humanizing the project at a pedestrian level. Above, a gap is created, with standing seam Colorbond cladding ‘floating’ above the lower level.
In a playful reference to traditional box-gable housing forms in the area, suspended lattice screen was created, offering the benefits of softening the elevation, whilst providing sun screening and privacy benefits.
Internally, the house uses three predominant materials, timber, concrete and white plaster. All GF soffits were left exposed, the exposed concrete complimenting the timber floors for a more raw and timeless aesthetic.
The house layout prioritizes intelligent zoning, with clear distinctions between children’s rooms, the master suite, living areas and the separate suite, designed as both options for the clients’ parents on extended or permanent stays, or aging in place.
